LONG AGO, in a "land belonging to no one," a lonely, fifteen-year-old child named Gregor is exploring the treacherous rock formations at the base of the fabled Two-Pronged Mountain. He reaches into a crevice and withdraws something the likes of which he has never seen a heavy fragment of perfectly smooth black glass. He hurries the discovery away, hoping to contribute it to his small cache of obscure treasures, which includes broken pieces of once-extravagant china and a long, razor-sharp tooth from the jaw of an unknown beast. But when Gregor arrives at his homestead and displays the fragment at the family hearth, his father utters a stunned reaction in a single word "Obsidian…." For it seems that with one spontaneous action, Gregor has unknowingly summoned a horrible force that could set blood against blood and cast everyone he has ever known into mortal danger. As father and son race back towards the mountain to try to prevent what has already begun, a massive black cloud on the far horizon slowly begins to advance. In his first novel for younger readers, Jude Joseph Lovell has written an exciting epic about finding the courage to face down your fears, sustain your losses, and rise.

Obsidian is a whirlwind of fantasy and intrigue that had me from the start and kept me wanting more at the finish. Oh, Scribe…why must we wait to find out what lies in the darkness? Moving on—I have read another general fiction novel by this author and already know his talents in descriptive narrative and spinning a good yarn. However, Obsidian, young adult fantasy is more in my reading area, thus changing my perspective from acquired reader to enthusiastic reader. The main character, Gregor, as well as other secondary characters, is well drawn and extremely likeable as he searches for the purpose of the dark object. Throughout the novel I found myself not only routing for Gregor, but many of the other characters as well. In addition, the world of Terranullis, the scene for the novel, is well thought out and easily imagined. Overall, the novel is thoroughly enjoyable and I would recommend it to young adults and adults alike. My only qualm is that I have to wait for a sequel that better be coming along soon…

Obsidian A Novel Jude Joseph Lovell 9781497446939 Books Reviews

The resulting concoction, I am guessing, would taste something like Jude Lovell's rousing new fantasy/adventure yarn, Obsidian. And it's a pretty satisfying brew that in the end, leaves you thirsty for more.

Lovell is the author (previously) of an eclectic and finely-crafted collection of short stories (We'll See You When We Get There), the combination sci-fi/military novel Blue Six, and what I'm guessing is the only book-length study of Herman Melville's work that includes references to novelist Stephen Wright and the action filmmaker John Woo (Forever Voyaging)!? Here, he ventures into the fantasy genre for the first time, bringing along the heart and descriptive powers that made these other books of his well worth seeking out if you haven’t already.

At the heart of Obsidian is an examination of the bonds of love and loyalty that can draw not only fathers and sons closer together, but also members of different generations within the same family. We don't realize until at least midway through the book that our main character, a young man named Gregor, is discovering not only the gifts and qualities that define who he is, but also his own place within the legacy and history of his family and people. He is called on to make some difficult and life-altering choices along the way, but sometimes that is what’s necessary when the reputation and safety of our loved ones are threatened.

Fans of fantasy and adventure fiction will recognize many of the tropes and hallmarks of the genre – Lovell consciously or unconsciously echoes the work of literary masters such as Tolkien, Lovecraft and Lloyd Alexander, as well as movies such as Time Bandits and The Dark Crystal. But he also builds a world, undergirded by a mythology, that feels believable and lived-in, and that’s very much to his credit. And while at first it feels very much like a “guy’s” story, especially with the father-son relationship at its heart (not to mention the monsters and the magic), Lovell skillfully weaves female presence and point of view into the tale in ways that subtly subvert expectations.

In the end, however, this is Gregor’s quest – and it is an engaging, metaphorical saga of a young man facing the heartache and uncertainty of adulthood for the first time. And did I mention it ends with one whale of a cliffhanger that leaves you literally plunging headlong into a great, wide unknown?? Lovell leaves the story tantalizingly open-ended, and if enough of us seek out Obsidian and spread the word about this rewarding adventure, perhaps he can be convinced to lead us once more into the black breach…
This is a unique story, well-written and intriguingly imaginative. Appeals to mature readers as well as teens, a neat feat!
Sending copies of this new Lovell book on to my family as a "good winter read."
There are numerous meaningful messages in this novel, not just for young readers, but for old folks like me. I really enjoyed this book. The author describes events and objects in a way that provokes the reader's imagination. It was a nice adventure. RJN.
I am just about half way through it. I am really enjoying and marveling at it. It's thoughtful and the characters and scenes are richly and deftly described. More later...
I'm a 14 year old boy and I thought Obsidian was fantastic!! Very entertaining; it kept my interest high the whole way. Gregor changed throughout the book; of course , the most obvious transition from a boy to a man, but also a coming of age. The book was easy to follow and I liked the "old legend" and the "dark weather/cloud"; it built the suspense tremendously. The ending leaves the novel open for a sequel, so hopefully there's one coming soon!!
I'm going to be totally honest I know and grew up with this author and have known him for around 26 years now. Great guy, awesome father and husband.

Now on the the book. I'm not much for words so this will be short and simple.

For me Obsidian starts off rather slow and could have jumped into the meat of the story just a little faster. But once it did it grabbed my attention and wouldn't let go. I found myself wishing I had more time in the day to devout to reading.

The story centers around a young boy and his discovery of a mysterious object and the journey of his life . A coming of age story if you will.

Believe when I say I really liked this book (not just saying that because I know the writer, as he well knows that I will criticize him at any chance I can, all in good fun of course).

If you have nothing to read or maybe bored pick this book up, you won't be disappointed.
